How You Can See the Missing Variable in Quantum Physics: Why the Witness (Raw Awareness) Comes Before Measurement
Fifty years ago I already had a conviction that has never left me: there is always something smaller than the smallest we can measure, and always something bigger than the biggest we can see.
Science updates its rulers. First it is atoms, then particles, then quarks. First it is the universe, then the observable universe. The names change, the boundaries move, but the deeper truth remains: the horizon is not the end.
Now modern physics sits in a strange corner of reality. At the quantum level, what we call a system seems to behave like a wave of possibilities until something happens that forces a definite outcome. The most important question is still not being asked loudly enough: What exactly are we adding to reality when we say, "we observed it"?
This blog is written from philosophy with a focus on anthropology, and it places consciousness at the center, using a definition I have used before: Consciousness is raw awareness: the witness. Not thoughts. Not analysis. Not emotion. The witness.
1) There is a difference between events and knowledge
A rock can fall in a forest with no humans nearby. Something happened. But "something happened" is not the same as "something was known."
Knowledge is not merely an event. Knowledge is an event that has been noticed, framed, measured, interpreted, named, and stored. Those verbs are not physical. They are acts of awareness.
A detector can register a click. But only the witness can turn a click into data and connect it to a question.
Practical tip: When you hear "observation" in quantum physics, ask: do they mean interaction, or do they mean knowledge?
FACT: The measurement problem remains unresolved: the math predicts probabilities, but does not uniquely explain why definite outcomes are experienced.
2) The double-slit is not just physics; it is a mirror
The double-slit experiment is often described like this:
- If you do not obtain which-path information, the pattern looks like interference (wave-like).
- If you do obtain which-path information, the interference disappears (particle-like outcomes).
This suggests that the world is not simply out there behaving the same way regardless of our investigation. It forces the question: are we seeing the world as it is, or as it becomes under questioning?
Delayed-choice style experiments push this further. The measurement choice is made after the particle has already entered the experimental setup. Different interpretations explain this differently, but no interpretation escapes the point: measurement is central.
Practical tip: Stop treating quantum weirdness as entertainment. Treat it as a hint that the universe is not simply a dead machine.
FACT: Delayed-choice experiments are widely discussed as tests of how wave-like versus particle-like behavior is revealed by measurement context.
3) The trap is thinking turning on a machine is where influence begins
Many explanations act as if influence begins when the detector is placed or the instrument is switched on. But that is not where the real process begins.
The process begins earlier, when a human mind forms an intention, frames a question, imagines a setup that could answer it, builds a ritual of measurement, and chooses what counts as evidence.
So the act of observation is not the final moment of looking. It is the final step of a much longer chain that began in raw awareness.
Practical tip: If you want to understand the observer effect, track the chain backward: instrument, experiment, intention, witness.
FACT: Scientific measurement is operational: it depends on how a question is posed and how an outcome is defined.
4) Intent is not a decoration; it is the steering wheel
Intent precedes apparatus.
Before the machine exists, the intent exists. Before the measurement exists, the intent exists. Before the question is formal, the intent exists.
The investigator is not outside the universe. The investigator is made of the same universe. In a sense, the universe is reflecting on itself.
All knowledge that will ever be known already exists, but it must be approached. Discovery is a road. If you do not walk it, you do not arrive.
Practical tip: Replace "I found the truth" with "I walked a path that allowed truth to become visible."
FACT: What scientists look for, and how they interpret what they see, depends on prior concepts and frameworks.
5) The witness is the missing variable
Consciousness, as raw awareness, is not a thought. It is not a belief. It is not the ego. It is not language. It is the witness.
Without the witness, there is no measurement as knowledge. There is no result as meaning. There is no proof as a shared conclusion.
A detector can click forever in a universe with no witness, and it would never become science. It would never become knowledge.
Interaction is not observation. Interaction is physics. Observation is awareness.
Practical tip: Separate technical observer from conscious witness every time you read quantum commentary.
FACT: Some interpretations of quantum mechanics place the observer, knowledge, or information at the center, highlighting that measurement is not only mechanical.
6) Why this matters: we may be underestimating human power
If the witness is truly prior, then humans are not merely observers of reality. Humans are participants in the unfolding of reality. Not in a childish way, but in a deeper way: the questions we can hold in awareness shape the paths we walk, the tools we build, and the realities we extract from the unknown.
Culture can train people to think small and worship existing boundaries as final. Or culture can train people to ask deeper questions, hold paradox, and tolerate mystery long enough for new insight to emerge.
Practical tip: Practice staying with mystery without rushing to closure. The witness can hold what the mind cannot yet explain.
FACT: Human cognition is shaped by culture and language, influencing what questions are considered meaningful and what explanations feel acceptable.
Conclusion: my question to the scientific community
Science can continue to build instruments that measure faster, smaller, and deeper. But the most urgent scientific question may not be about the particle. It may be about the witness.
When you say observation collapses possibilities into outcomes, stop treating observation as a machine setting. Tell us what observation really is.
Because if raw awareness is the missing variable, then the universe is not only made of things. It is also made of knowing. And that changes everything.
